Wood Nymph Hummingbird, Amazonas Region, Peru 2015

October 20, 2015

I am enchanted by Hummingbirds as a bird lover and frustrated by them as a photographer.  I think people can only appreciate their grace and astonishing speed once they have been glimpsed in the wild and the north of Peru is the place where I prefer to try and photograph them.  Hour upon hour I have tried. With these birds, photography is not usually a case of waiting for them to appear but it boils down to getting a good shot.  The best strategy is to wait and watch and this may enable you to glimpse a lesser known aspect of their behaviour.  In my case, I was surprised to find that these birds are fiercely territorial and aggressive, not just to their own kind but other species as well.  Just as surprising is the intense noise they make whilst flying and hovering, and this has to be heard to be believed.
