San Bushman proudly displays a successful hunt, Eastern Namibia 2014

October 20, 2015

The San people are masters of the Namibian Bush.  They live off the land, still seeking out an existence in some of the remote parts of Eastern Namibia.  The men hunt regularly and I was lucky enough to join them on a hunt one morning which turned out to be successful.  The village men had recently discovered that a porcupine had been using a burrow in a large mound out in the bush for its daytime sleep.  This they had discovered by watching a leopard which had also been stalking the animal.  When we arrived at the mound, the four men spent three hours digging down to the animal’s lair before sending the smallest hunter (Nani) in through the entrance to force the animal back towards where they were digging.  The end was quick for the animal and Nani was one who victoriously pulled the carcass through the excavation tunnel.  This photograph was taken with the kill on Nani’s shoulders before he triumphantly carried it back to the village to be greeted by joyous children.
