The Karo Tribe, Omo Valley, Ethiopia 2014

October 20, 2015

The Karo tribe are one of the many tribes inhabiting the Omo Valley in the far south of Ethiopia. There are about a dozen tribes in this area ranging from those with small populations to those comprising of thousands.  They stretch right down to the Kenyan border and right up to the big town of Tumi.  Here the roads are not great and the further south you go the more inaccessible the area becomes.  This maybe the region’s saviour as tourists are starting to visit this area and these locals are getting accustomed to asking for money for everything.  However the further south you travel the more chance you have of seeing interesting sights and meeting interesting people. I had witnessed the jumping of the bulls initiation ceremony with the Hamar tribe the day before and was pleased to meet the Karo who were interested in showing off their prized Kalashnikovs.  The man on the left was just 17 years old and laughed when I told him my age.  From then on he called me “Grandad”.
